Former homeless residents have shared their stories with the homeless organizations that have helped them get back on their feet. Everyone’s story is different and with a little push these people have gotten back on their feet. Here are three stories from three strong individuals:
Homeless Solutions: Olga
A woman by the name of Olga had a good life with a good job, a nice home and an adorable son. Their life quickly changed when the company she was working for downsized and she lost her job. Olga and her son Michael had no family or friends to turn to for help and eventually became homeless. They became homeless, up until they were accepted into a Transitional Housing Program. Thanks to Homeless Solutions, Olga was able to save up and moved into an apartment with her son.
Homless Solutions is a private non-profit organization based in New Jersey. This specific organization is eye catching because they've been helping the homeless since 1989. They believe in providing a "Hand UP, Not a HandOUT" approach. Their goal is to give those in need the tools and surroundings needed to rebuild their lives.
Front Steps: Reyes
Reye lived in Indiana for work and decided to take a week vacation to visit his family in Corpus Christi. He decided driving would be cheaper, little did he know that his vacation would last a little longer than expected. Four hours from his destination, Reyes’s truck broke down and the cost to repair it was more than he could afford and so was a bus ticket back to Indiana. Instead, he spent his money getting himself to the biggest city near him, Austin, Texas and became homeless.
Reyes thought, “You know, I just stopped caring. I didn’t think anyone cared about me, so I stopped caring about me. I appreciate everything that everyone has done for me, but it’s time for me to get back to being me.” Without secure housing, Reyes is now currently living in Front Steps’ RCP transitional home while he looks for an apartment and now has a full-time job.
Front Steps: Sam
Sam’s story is full of hard work, discipline and perseverance. He was born and raised in Austin, Texas and has struggled with homelessness since he was 18. He had a rough upbringing, wouldn’t listen to his mom and his dad was murdered when Sam was just a boy. One winter, while he was sleeping on cardboard in the rain, he told himself he’d change. He was able to pull himself out of it. He worked hard, went to school, and kept working until his income was stable enough to get off the streets.
Front Steps is a non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas that provides servies ranging from emergency shelter, case management, to permanent housing. They believe that together, we can restore hope to Austin's most vulnerble citizens: the homeless.
Sometimes all it takes is one unfortunate situation and you could very well end up homeless. These people managed to get help from organizations and people like you and me to take back their lives.
